When children reach a certain age, they will want their parents to get them a pet. This is an animal companion that will keep them company and teach them how to be responsible. Picking the perfect pet for your child can be tricky. This article will look at the different types of pets you can get for your child.
- Puppy or dog
You can never go wrong with a puppy or a dog. With so many breeds to choose from, some are laid back, calm, and will not harm your child when they are playing with them. Dogs are called man’s best friends for a reason. They can easily be trained and live for a very long time however, they need to be cared for a lot.
You will need to buy the food, a good collar, take them to the vet and some chew toys to prevent them from ripping your favorite furniture to shreds. If you have a very energetic child, a dog is perfect because they will be able to keep up with your child’s energy while most pets can’t.
- Kitten or cat
Another animal that is very popular with kids is of course a cat. They are wonderful pets because they are big enough to cause massive injuries to kids and just like dogs, they can live for a very long time.
They are very playful however, what sets them apart from dogs is they are very independent. While dogs need constant attention, cats require very little attention. You need to invest in a litter box as well as plenty of toys to keep them happy. If you have a very energetic child, this is not the best pet. A laid back child will love a cat as a pet.
- You can get them a fish
A fish is also a wonderful pet because it doesn’t take up much room but requires plenty of attention. They are very easy to feed but need their water changed once in a while when it’s dirty. A goldfish, for example, has a lifespan of up to 25 years if properly looked after. This means your child can have the same pet until they grow up.
- A hamster
These cute little creatures don’t require much maintenance and will not take much room at all. All they need is food, water, a wheel, and a roomy cage. If you feel that your child is not ready to handle having a dog or a cat yet, a hamster is a great first pet.
- A bird
While a dog or cat is very popular as first pets, some kids are different and would rather have a bird as their first pet. While a bit of maintenance is required, they spend plenty of time in their cages and do not require any training.
Birds are very entertaining creatures and have unique personalities. It is important to do your research before getting a bird for your child because not all species make the ideal pet. Small birds are highly recommended because they are easy to look after.
