Three Types of Exotic Pets and How to Care for Them

Many households across the world either have a dog or a cat as a pet. For those who prefer something different, there is a wide range of exotic pets to choose from. Before doing that, one has to understand what an exotic pet is. This is an animal that is not common or domesticated.

  1. Hedgehogs

These animals are very different from rodents and belong to the Erinaceinae family. They make this list because they are one of the easiest to look after. One of the major drawbacks of owning a hedgehog is they are not as social as dogs or cats.

They need to be kept in a cage and will not suffer from any form of anxiety if they are separated from their owners. Anyone who has a busy career or travels a lot, this is the perfect pet.

They have a lifespan of between 5-7 years and they mainly eat fruits and insects. Since so many people own hedgehogs these days, many pet stores sell food for them. They are known to have a bit of a temper but when handled the right way, they are easily tamed.

These animals also make a wonderful pet for children since they are easy to take care of as pointed out above. Plenty of cleaning is involved and as long as one is ready to do that or help their child with that, they are wonderful pets even though they defecate a lot.

  1. Rodents are also wonderful exotic pets

Rodents come in many shapes, types, and sizes. They are so many of them to choose from and some are more unusual and interesting when compared to others. Let’s look at the different types one by one.

  • Degus – first on the list of rodents is the degus and these closely resemble guinea pigs or chinchillas. They are very social creatures and need to be housed or kept with another. You need to keep them in a place that has plenty of room to exercise and interact with others.
  • Chipmunks – Everyone knows of the film Alvin and the chipmunks. These very active creatures closely resemble a squirrel and need plenty of space. You need to purchase a very tall and wide cage for them. They can be a handful when it comes to handling them but they are certainly one of the most interesting creatures to own on this list. Food can be found in pet stores and you don’t have to spend plenty of money on them.
  • Spiny mice – These are very different from the mice that are sold in many stores but are roughly the same size. They require the same amount of card as domesticated mice and will need a glass with plenty of space as well as a wheel. They have an omnivorous diet and their food can be found in pet stores.
  1. The short-tailed opossum

These creatures might look a bit like rodents but a classic example of these pets is a Wallaby. Short-tailed opossums need to be housed alone because they like some alone time. You need to keep them in a spacious place, with beddings, plenty of water and a wheel. Their diet is similar to that of a hedgehog and will eat plenty of fruits, insects, and vegetables.
