Citi® AAdvantage® World Platinum Select® changes to World Elite® Platinum MasterCard®

MasterCard has apparently changed many cardholder accounts from Citi "World Platinum" Select to "World Elite Platinum", with additional services of "travel concierge" and "airport concierge" (no indication the latter might be paid). See here for benefit information, includung Trip Cancellation Insrance. It has an EMV chip (currently "chip and signature", not "chip and pin"). The annual cost to continue at $95.

We have reissued a new Citi® Platinum Select® / AAdvantage® World Elite® MasterCard® with the same account number as your current card. A new card is being mailed and should arrive soon.
N.B. This is NOT the same as the Citi Executive® / AAdvantage® World EliteTM MasterCard® with full Admirals Club membership for the primary card holder (not subsidiary card holders) that costs $450 annually. This card does not provide lounge access.

Citi® AAdvantage® World Platinum Select® changes to World Elite® Platinum MasterCard®

Hi all.

I have had a few people tell me that recently (last 2 days) they have signed into their Citi accounts and received a message that their Citi AAdvantage Platinum World MC was being changed to a Citi AAdvantage World Elite MC. They have said that this was being done for people with a CL of at least 5k and that they did not initiate this in any way or app for the Citi AA Elite Executive card with the $450AF. Here's what their messages read:

We have reissued a new Citi® Platinum Select® / AAdvantage® World Elite® MasterCard® with the same account number as your current card. A new card is being mailed and should arrive soon.

This replacement card may have been requested by an authorized user(s) on the account or is a new card being issued to you by Citi.

If you have not received your new card(s) by the expiration date of your current card, please contact Customer Service at the number on the back of your card.

Has anyone else received this message and do you know of any benefit changes this will bring? I have the Citi AA Plat Visa Sig. and have not received this message. Maybe this is a card change that's associated with the merger?? I say that because the message stated: If you have not received your new card(s) by the expiration date of your current card. I think it's too early for that but who knows...

Thanks

Also forgot to mention that the message didn't say executive.

I had this happen to me a couple of days ago. I called Citi to better understand, and they explained it as I was being upgraded to World Elite. Customer service said the yearly fee would not change (World Elite Executive is usually $450 a year vs. Platinum Select being $85 a year I believe), and the benefit I would be receiving now was the 24 hour concierge service. However, World Elite usually includes access to the lounges as well, so I am still a bit confused on what this will really entail.

I doubt its the $450 annual fee Executive card. First the black card doesn't say Platinum, its just say Executive. And as you pointed out, on your message it does not say "executive". I had this message a couple years ago actually. does your card show the mastercard logo in red/yellow colors? The ones you will be upgraded to will be silver logo.. Nothing in terms of benefits changes i think (probably some minor like concierge access), but on the back you'll see "world elite", same as the $450 annual fee black "executive" card...

The reason this is being done is simple: World Elite cards get a higher discount rate from the merchant than World cards. So, by swapping out your card from World to World Elite, and keeping the same account number, annual fee, and benefits (for the most part), Cit now gets more money from the merchant each time you use the card.

No. World Elite is nothing more than a MasterCard type, it's like their version of Visa Signature.

Citi EXECUTIVE has a $450 annual fee.

New Silver/Blue Card Reads "World Elite"

Please forgive me if this has been discussed.

When I applied with Citi back in February I received a silver/blue card that reads "World" and "Platinum."

Unprovoked, I today received in the mail a new card with the same exact number. The new one reads "World Elite." But it's not black, it's still silver/blue.

It's like some sort of hybrid of what's described here:
https://aa.com/i18n/AAdvantage/e...-executive.jsp

I'm confused. Did I just get an upgraded "elite" card? Should I expect a higher annual fee all of the sudden? Should I jet of the the nearest Admiral's Club?

While it seems logical to call and ask Citi, I realize that's an exercise in futility.
Is anyone else in the same boat?

Thanks.

My regular AAdvantage card has said "World Elite" since before the Executive card was out there. Definitely not the same as the Executive card.

Thanks.
It's so odd that I received both "World" and "World Elite" back to back within 60 days of applying.

"World Elite" is a subtype of MasterCard products, which include a few features and a higher merchant fee. It's their equivalent of "VISA Signature." It has no effect on the issuer-specifc benefits though. The main difference is a cooler-looking logo.

You're right.
My 'new' card card carries the hologram-style MasterCard logo.
My 'old' card carries the orange and yellow logo.

However, I'm still perplexed.

**EDIT: just realized I posted this in the Citi Executive thread, this probably belongs in the Citi Platinum Select thread since that was the card I had before being "upgraded" to this version of the World Elite. Please feel free to move if necessary**

Same story for me, just got a new World Elite card as well. I asked the representative and he said I had been "upgraded" to this card. The AA related benefits don't change, but the card comes with additional, non-AA related benefits. Looking at the little sheet of paper it lists the following:

1. Priceless Cities: Get access to one-of-a-kind, handpicked international experiences and others, including fine dining, world-class sporting events or indulgent shopping experiences around the world
2. Personal Concierge Service: Enjoy complimentary 24/7 assistance with dinner reservations, entertainment and travel recommendations, and other helpful services around the world
3. Airport Concierge: Arrange for a dedicated agent escort 24/7 at over 450 airports. In some locations, you can even be expedited through the security and/or the immigration process
4. Travel Services: Get access to a personal travel advisor, special amenities and exclusive offers on select hotels, resorts and transportation worldwide

Appears this Mastercard website goes over all the benefits: Mastercard World Elite

I'd be interested to see how the personal concierge stacks up and the airport concierge seems interesting.

Maybe I'm spoiled with some of the other credit cards I've got, but I would have thought that for an "elite" credit card the services and benefits would have come in a booklet or something other than a single, folded sheet of paper.

Oh well, I got the card for AA related benefits so I am not going to complain.

Is there a picture of the new card anywhere? Or can someone post one? I'm curious to see the new logo and design.

Agreed - this is an interchange rate change and a slightly more prestigious name. This is not a $450 Executive card with lounge access. My AA plat card was a world elite for years until I downgraded to the free gold (because I'm paying for the Executive).

I work in the payments industry and have access to the interchange rate tables - you would think Elite, Platinum, etc would have lower rates for the merchants as they are probably more trustworthy. Exact opposite as the credit cards must pay for those benefits somehow.
