Tipping: Don't do what I did.

To make a long story short, I had breakfast at a Marriott on a Platinum voucher. The service was great and both food and gratuity were covered. Nevertheless, I added a $5 tip to be charged to my room for a total of $5 after the voucher.

The $25 breakfast charge, plus tip, ended up being charged. After explaining to the FDA, the post-stay "correction" was to add a second $5 tip. End result: $35 for a $0 breakfast.

Lesson: Don't add a tip-only room charge because no good deed goes unpunished.

Poor CS, but for a $5 tip, just leave cash.

Cash is good but I rarely carry cash, particularly popping down for breakfast

I've never had the charge problem although sometimes in this situation, I will be given a bill for $25.00 (particularly with the SPG breakfast benefit) and then told it will be taken off. I'll then add the tip, write a comment that it is a plat breakfast, and put a total of $5.00

While its annoying, I've never seen it show up on my room bill.

For me I always tip with the CC because it would most likely be company expense.
But yes cash is more convenient.

Bad hotel so simply leave them 1* reviews, 1* on the survey, and if you're that mad, write in to Marriott

I've had the same thing happen as OP describes but was cleared up at checkout.

Surprised so many FT'ers are suggesting using cash and thus not getting any MR points for that tip!

They said they would. Instead, they upped my ante another $5.

Your "lesson" seems to be based on the assumption that employees at every Marriott would make the same error. That's not a valid assumption, in my book.

Plus, it hurts the restaurant staff who aren't responsible for the problem described.

No kidding.......are these people insane?

Cash should be reserved for drug dealers and prostitutes who aren't accepting Bitcoin yet.

FWIW, for years I stayed at a midwestern FS where the breakfast buffet was included in our rate M-F. Every morning the ladies had our to-go styrofoam, utensils and bag at the ready and went off to get our choice of juice while we filled the container and good natured ribbing was exchanged. They would give us a bill for the full amount to sign daily and I'd add a few bucks for them and only that would end up on the room master. For years executed perfectly.

Isolated mistakes are going to happen, even if compounded here, hardly indicative of the entire system and this is hardly permanent...

I never get MR points for the tip (other than the credit card add on). Just the pretax bill before tax.
